This is the time of year when we see a marked increase in door to door solicitors. All solicitors operating within the Town of Watertown must be registered with the Police Department. Background checks are conducted on all registered vendors. If you are approached by any solicitors and/or you have any question as to their legitimacy please contact us right away at 617-972-6500. An officer will be dispatched to verify the identity of the person. Over the past week there have been several incidents involving solicitors claiming to be selling magazines for Prestige Sales or Destiny Sales in the area. None of these persons are registered with Watertown Police Department. While none of these persons have been identified as being involved in any crimes in Watertown please remember to keep your doors locked even if you are just out in your backyard.

Be aware of a Jury Duty scam. The caller claims to be a jury coordinator. If you protest that you never received a summons for jury duty, the scammer asks you for your Social Security number and date of birth so he or she can verify the information and cancel the arrest warrant. Give out any of this information and bingo; your identity was just stolen.
The fraud has been reported so far in several states. The FBI and the federal court system have issued nationwide alerts on their web sites, warning consumers about the fraud.

On Tuesday June 2, 2009, at 1108 hours, police responded to 990 Belmont St. on a report of a possible attempted abduction. The caller was a third party caller. The initial call was that a male in the area of the Watertown High School attempted to coerce a female student into his vehicle.
Because of the nature of the original report the police and school department conducted a complete and thorough investigation into this incident. The Watertown Police Department has concluded its investigation and found that the initial report of an attempted abduction was reported incorrectly. It was found that at no time was any student at risk of danger and no criminal activity had occurred.
